An SVG has no size until you give it one

An SVG doesn't store pixels, it stores instructions: a circle here, a path there, this fill. That's why it looks perfect at any size, and why a logotype should always originate as an SVG. And it's exactly why an SVG has no resolution of its own: until someone decides what size to draw it at, the question "how many pixels is it?" has no answer.

That's the one decision that matters in this conversion: choosing the width. Because it's drawn straight from the vector, a 2000-pixel PNG comes out just as sharp as a 200-pixel one; there's no small bitmap being blown up along the way. If you specify nothing, the size in the viewBox is used, and on an icon that's often 24 or 64 pixels — almost never what you were after.

Why rasterise something that was already perfect

It sounds like a step backwards, and technically it is, but there are places an SVG simply can't go:

  • Social media previews. The og:image tag doesn't accept SVG: Facebook, X, LinkedIn and WhatsApp all need a bitmap.
  • Email. Practically no mail client renders SVG.
  • Platforms that reject it on security grounds. An SVG is text and can carry scripts, so many upload forms won't take it.
  • Documents and presentations in software that imports it badly.
  • Thumbnails and avatars, where the system expects a fixed size.

Check the text before you export

It's the most common failure and you won't see it until it's done. If your SVG renders text by calling a font by name, that font has to exist wherever the file gets drawn. If it isn't there, the text comes out in a different typeface or doesn't come out at all.

The fix is to convert text to outlines in your editor — Illustrator, Figma and Inkscape all do it in one click — before exporting the SVG. From then on the file depends on nothing external.

Common questions

What size should I pick?
The size of the slot it goes into, doubled if it'll be seen on high-density screens. For a social preview image, 1200 px wide is the standard. For a logo in a document, 600–1200 is plenty.
Why did my PNG come out tiny?
Because without a width, the one stored in the file's viewBox is used, and on an icon that's often 24 or 64 pixels. It isn't a fault: an SVG has no resolution of its own, so something has to say what size to draw it at.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Anything unfilled in the SVG comes out transparent in the PNG, which is exactly what you want for a logo that sits on different backgrounds.
Can I go back to SVG afterwards?
Not by converting. Rasterising discards the curves and leaves a grid of pixels; recovering the vector means vectorising, which reinterprets the image and gives a different result from the original.
Why do some sites refuse SVG?
Because an SVG is a text file that can contain scripts, and accepting SVG uploads opens a security problem. That's why many platforms reject it even when the format would be perfect for the job.
Will the SVG's fonts show up?
Only if the text has been converted to outlines. An SVG that calls a font by name depends on that font being installed wherever it gets drawn. If your logo contains text, convert it to curves in your editor before exporting.
